Gulf Coast Town Center and Corvettes on the Gulf 2/ 27/21
We had a most enjoyable day at the Gulf Coast Town Center!
The Town Center is a very up-scale location and our parking were surrounded by all kinds of shops, with 10 restaurants
Our excitement was somewhat hampered by the exceptionally long waiting time on the access road to the actual parking area, I’d say it was close to 45 minutes. The host club was kind enough to reserve parking spaces for us, so we quickly got parked and went to work on our cars. On the way up to the registration area, an exceptionally long car was spotted, and it was a “Panther”. Upon closer inspection, it had 3 350 cubic inch engines linked together in a row, with the clutch housings of the engine in front linked to the crankshaft of the engine behind it. The engineering on this car was unbelievable!
There must have been 250+ cars there and after the judging was completed, it was TROPHY time! There were two classes of cars, Corvettes and Others. The classes were divided by generations and further by stock or modified. We missed winning Club Participation by a whisker, however as this venue was very much an experiment, we really didn’t feel bad about that. Out of our 16 cars, we took away six trophies and it was the usual suspects who won them.
All in all, it was a very enjoyable day and look for this on our car show schedule for next year.

Sebring Track Fun Day 1/23/21
Members enjoyed walking around the pits and watching the events on the track. At noon there was a 'parade lap when the corvettes could be on the track in a lead follow set up. There was a chance for a ride in a race car or to drive the member's car at speed. One club member got to ride in a race car, so you may want to ask him about the thrill of victory and letting a 23 year old kid give him a "best time with his clothes on".
A special thank you to Steve and Lyle of C&S Corvettes (in Sarasota) who treated us like royalty providing parking, cooking us lunch, making the parade ride happen, getting us in the gate, and soooo much more!!!!!!! Call them to get work done on your car or express your appreciation to them at 941.923.5064.

Celtic Ray Member Lunch 1/12/21
Seventeen VFC members enjoyed a terrific lunch at an authentic Irish pub in Punta Gorda on Tuesday, January 12. The day started with rain and stayed overcast so the decision to move inside was made. Terry Tracy enlightened several members about the Celtic Ray and its transformation over the past 10 years. We gathered in the original building of the Celtic Ray where the menus are written on chalkboards and you have to order all food and drink at the bar. Remember your table number so your food is delivered to you! Everyone enjoyed a beverage of their choice and food such as fish and chips, Shepard’s pie, pasties and toasties. If you haven’t visited this establishment, it would definitely be worth your while to stop in.

Cruzin to the Hop with Lance" 11/28/20
We had an excellent day with Lance and his car friends at his show this weekend. The day dawned bright and clear, and right before 8 a.m., we had our caravan on the road with 5 Corvettes.
Once we got there and squared away the Corvettes, and found some nice trees to sit under, we all enjoyed a nice brunch at the Sommers Family Restaurant. For a Saturday morning, the restaurant was full, which is really a tribute to their cuisine.
I was able to use stiff hiking boots while driving, and switch back to the cast once at the show. My black car has a normal clutch, so it didn’t hurt too much when shifting, but I never would have been able to drive the red car, with it’s 100 lb. pressure plate!
All the guys got together after the brunch and settled into a nice conversation about our cars. We had two non-members pull up a chair and we found out they were new to Corvettes and had really no experience with their C5’s. So we told them about the harmonic balancer issues, the ranger method for the clutch fluid, throw-out bearings, sway bar end link issues, torque converters, the dreaded EBCM failures, and the electrical gremlins that can drain a battery in a week. Later on I thought we might have overdone it and possibly made them regret buying their cars, but I got a nice note that evening basically stating how much he learned and what’s our next show so he could join us!
I had the chance to catch up with Lance and ask him about his business. Much like our club, he’s also experiencing the rule of 50, which is basically 50% of the attendance he used to get. We are seeing pretty much the same participation rate within our Club.
Trophy time was soon upon us, and we were delighted to be publicly thanked as a Club by Lance for joining the show. All in all, we had Corvette FUN!

Ladies Lunch 11/19/20
Lunch at Landys Restaurant in Englewood was enjoyed by 11 VFC ladies. The food was delicious and lots of take home food as well. If you are looking for something different, it's a Greek restaurant. It is located on the water with a nice outdoor seating area. It was fun to catch up and share stories.

Trunk or Treat 10/30/20
VFC members participated in a "car show" type event for kids who came in costume to the Classic Cars store. Of the 40+ classic cars at the event, our club made a nice showing with 10 corvettes in a row. Twenty members handed out buckets of candy to kids. Christine did a wonderful job to decorate her trunk for the kids. There were alot of kids and most were dressed in cute costumes for the festive event at dust. Some really enjoyed looking at the cars and will probably become future cool car owners. Thanks to all who participated in the event.

Parade Celebration 9/20/20
Sunday evening at 5:30 pm in between rain storms, 9 corvettes met at Publix in Englewood and did a drive-by parade for a couple celebrating 50 years of marriage. Frank, the husband is a Corvette owner himself, but can't drive anymore. So the neighborhood put together a surprise party for the couple and reached out to our club for a surprise Corvette parade.
Driving down to Englewood, I was speculating I would be the only member to drag my Corvette out in the rain. Much to my surprise, Al and JoAnn were waiting in the lot when I arrived. Then more cars kept showing up till finally we had nine cars total.
I am sorry to say I did not write down the names of our members, nor did I manage to take a photo of them. So the organizer of the party took some photos and sent them to me. Our members made Frank the happiest guy on earth. Sometimes the little things in life mean the most to a stranger or a neighbor.
One of our members gave Frank a t-shirt as well. Stop by and visit Frank if you have a few minutes

Ladies Lunch 9/22/20
We (the ladies) had a perfect weather day for a nice lunch outside at the Lighthouse Grill in Englewood. There were only five of us due to a couple last minute cancellations. It was nice to see some familiar faces and for me an opportunity to chat with new members I didn't know. We solved a couple world problems and laughed about other stuff. It was a perfect day.

Gatorama 8/20/20
The club had 25 people spend the day together at Gatorama and then on to lunch at Beef o Brady's in Punta Gorda. The weather was great. The caravan cruise was enjoyable. At Gatorama where we saw alligators and crocodile in all lengths. Some were very small and some were up to 17 feet long. They also had a feeding show where the gator would jump partially out of the water for bait. Quite impressive.
We then said goodbye to a few and the rest of us cruised into Punta Gorda for a late lunch. A great day and no rain.

Quaker Steak Suncoast Corvette Club Car Show August 15 2020
We had a wonderful time at the Quaker Steak/Suncoast Car Show. This show was formerly known as Corvettes on the Pier until the City of St. Petersburg priced the use of the park beyond the Club’s budget. So we have affectionately re-named this show as Corvettes on the Asphalt, as it took place on the parking lot. However the Quaker Steak Restaurant has astounding food, with their signature offering of Atomic Chicken Wings!
Our little caravan of 9 cars left the McDonalds parking lot on Laurel Road at 7 a.m. for the hour-long ride up to Pinellas County. We kept the caravan intact and had some near off-roading practice on roads that were being re-surfaced, with some very tall manhole covers! Bob and Jane Stuck did a great job of leading the caravan directly to its destination.
Arriving at 8 a.m., we were surprised by the number of cars already set up for the show, and also by the cars that continued to arrive up till 10.45 a.m. The previous shows of Suncoast were limited to Corvettes, but due to the uncertainty of registrations, they added a GM class that turned out to be mostly Camaro’s.
There were a total of 120 cars and mostly C6’s and C7’s. We were also surprised to see 4 C8’s at the show, so they are starting to make their presence known. There was a total of around 75 Corvettes, and this compared to last years registration of 170.The show director felt that COVID was a key factor along with the change of venue. This also was the first Corvette show since February in our area, and you could sense that people just had to get to a show!
Premium Productions conducted the judging and they have first rate trophies, in this case ceramic or porcelain Stingrays. The awards began a little earlier because of the weather, 92f with rain on the horizon. We competed in both the stock and modified classes and out of our 9 cars, we brought home 8 trophies with Best in Class and Overall Best in Class in Division. Our team left just before the rain came down, so all in all we had some Corvette FUN!!

Ideal Classic Car Show by Lance’s Cruizn’s August 8th
For most of us, the day started at 7:45 a.m. in the parking lot getting the cars ready for the action. Our Event Captain kept good track of our attendees.
By the time I arrived the show was in full swing and we estimated there were 80-90 cars in the parking lot, our parking area was filled up with some cars never seen before. My favorites were a 1972 bright yellow Pantera as well as a restored 1969 Corvette, both were trophy winners!
As we got closer to noon, the temperature was getting pretty hot, so the trophy presentation got underway a little sooner than normal, which was universally welcomed. Unusually for Florida at this time of year, the sky remained clear of clouds so the presentations were expedited!
There were two classes of trophies awarded and VFC cleaned up in the Best of Class category. This was nice to see as they all worked very hard to get their cars show CLEAN!
It was also nice to see some new members at the show. So all in all we had some great fun, with good music and food. Corvette FUN!

VFC-Lance’s Cruizn’s-Hooters Car Show August 1, 2020
We all had a great time at the Lance’s Cruizn’s Hooters Restaurant Car Show. Our day started with a nice caravan ride up 41 North to the Sarasota location.
One VFC member was already there and it was a delight to see his C-1 (pictured) in full drive-in movie mode, complete with working car speakers and banana splits on window trays.
No sooner were the cars ready and cleaned for the show than the rain started. Fortunately the weather cleared up and remained nice right up through trophy time.
We did take advantage of the restaurant and had a nice dinner, and the crowds really were out, enjoying the car show and good food. There must have been +120 cars in the parking lot!

Ideal Classic Car Show and VFC Lance’s Cruizn’ July 11, 2020
The day started off with at 7.45 a.m. with one member bringing acquired orange cones (Dollar Tree specials) to mark off ten parking spaces at Ideal Classic Cars in Venice. We had 10 members sign up electronically, so my expectation was we might get a few more.
Before I could grab a coffee, we had one Corvette after another arriving. Never let it be said that this club is ever late. We had one hot rod sneak in the middle of our line-up, adding some diversity to the Club.
A quick headcount and we had 17 cars, not 10. There was a greater number of the members with face masks who also kept the appropriate space between them.
Good music and a great food truck were on tap, and the weather only started to get hot by 11 a.m.
We had 14 winners out of the 17 cars present.

Norma Jean's Meet & Greet 7/7/20
Open Car Show 6/27/20
We just came from our first Sommers Restaurant Car Show, and WOW! We had 9 trophy winners out of 18 cars, and several trophies going to "first time ever at a show" members.
Our day started in the parking lot at McDonalds on Laurel Road and after a drivers briefing, our Caravan left at 7.45 a.m. The Caravan survived intact right up to the last traffic light on Bee Ridge and we were told that the sight and sounds of all the Corvettes coming into the parking lot was really something to see and hear.
All of us took advantage of going to Sommers Restaurant for brunch/lunch and that was the highlight of the day for me. It was pleasant to see groups of VFC members talking and getting together under the shade of the trees, and generally enjoying the day.

Howard’s Restaurant Englewood Meet & Greet
On June 25th, 2020 a group of 20 VFC members meet for lunch at Howard’s in Englewood. Everyone was so glad to be out and about after staying in our homes for so long. We all sat at tables of 4 inside. The day was just perfect to enjoy our lunch. The services was very attentive and everyone enjoyed their lunch along with conversations.

Sarasota Classic Car Museum-Lance’s Cruizn’s June 20, 2020
There were about 100 cars there, and the weather turned out perfect!
We started off as a small Caravan, leaving McDonald’s on Laurel Road, we made a group decision to take I-75 N, instead of Highway 41 and kept the speeds down to under 65 mph. Our caravan survived intact and we arrived before Lance and his team showed up. We had our choice of shaded parking and seating and within an hour, we were parked and getting prepped for the BIG SHOW.
Before long, we had all makes and models of hot rods, roadsters and classics arriving to park next to us. There was even an ORIGINAL Shelby Cobra there; he only wanted $2.5 million for it! Our food was all-American cuisine, hot dogs, hamburgers, crisps and sodas, and the vendor was an Equine Rescue Operation which uses the profits from the food sales to offset the expense of bringing horses back to health.
As we now are a significant presence at the show, Lance brought in someone with Corvette experience to help with the judging, as he said a hot-rod guy would not be able to do the judging properly. I think the judge did an outstanding job as the trophies went to our cars that usually win at other shows, with one or two exceptions.
Before we knew it, the National Anthem was being played and right after that, TROPHY AWARDS! We were quite proud to see yellow shirt after yellow shirt (although one non-member unhelpfully suggested we looked like BUMBLEBEES) march up to collect the awards, we all had a wonderful time and finished up by 1.45 p.m. Come on out and join us for the next one.

Painting With A Twist June 18, 2020
On June 18, ten of us met at Laurel Road to caravan to Sarasota for lunch and a fun painting class at Painting with a Twist. Individually selected boxed lunches from Nellie’s Deli were delivered with huge sandwiches, side dishes and a cookie for each of us. Our lunch was followed by a two hour class and we donned our masks and each created our own version of A Spring Lily. Who knew we were all so talented?!?! Our instructor Brandon was excellent, teaching with humor and encouragement. When COVID is over we look forward to doing this again with a bigger group.

Lance’s Ideal Classic Car Show June 13, 2020
The VFC Club made its first exploration in the Car Show World, post COVID-19! It was held at Ideal Classic Cars next to Jenkins Chevrolet, and is now a regularly scheduled monthly show. We guesstimate between 80-100 cars showed up, and many of the participants were wearing masks and/or practicing social distancing.
On our side, we had 15 Corvettes on display and if you ever been to a car show, you could just guess who attended from VFC, the hard-core Trophy collectors! On the balance we had mainly C-7’s on offer, with a few C-6’s, C-5’s, C-3’s and a C-1.
What did we learn about this show?
We were competing in open classes, meaning any type of vehicle could compete with us.
The Peace River Corvette Club came with 5-6 cars, and it was great to talk “club talk” with him. Their hallmark activity is the Peace River Poker Run, a fantastic way to spend a day with their club.
We also learned something about show start times, as it was advertised to begin at 9 a.m. I got there at 7.45 a.m. to reserve parking for us, and there must have been 20 cars parked already. Our sense was people are eager to get out and hit the shows again. There was great music on offer, breakfast and later fresh-made lunches and plenty to see inside Ideal Classic Cars, including the original Bat-Mobile!
The best part of the show?
Seeing the Yenko/SC Camaro with an appraised value of $1.8m.
Our show wrapped up by 12.45 p.m. and most of us were able to beat the rain shower on the way home. All in all, it was a pleasant way to see our friends again and we highly recommend you join us for the next one!

Lemon Bay High School Show 2/1/20
The Club had a great but rather wet time at the annual Lemon Bay High School Car Show. The show benefits the school’s band.
There were around 30 cars at the show, and compared to last year’s 108. It was still a good turnout given the epic rainfall that morning. Of the 30 cars, we had 25 Corvettes and I noticed the most amazing thing. They did not melt from the rain, dispelling a popular myth!
Despite the weather and rather low attendance, the Club contributed all of the judges. The highlight was seeing one of our members give a seminar on how to judge cars.
So all in all, VFC contributed and supported a local school and helped the kids in their efforts to have a successful band season, a big thank you to all attended.
The first twenty entrants qualified for a goody bag with lots of little gifts. We all got a beautiful T-Shirt with a Mustang GT350 on the front and back. One of the club members remarked helpfully that they would be good to use when you clean your wheels.

Tampa Bay Auto Museum
On November13, 2019 33 club members in 20 Corvettes travelled to the Tampa Bay Auto Museum. It is located in Pinellas Park a distance of 64 miles north of Venice.
This privately-owned museum houses the automobile collection of Alain Cerf and is housed in a very modern building adjacent to the Cerf’s international business Polypack Inc. Polypack designs and builds highly automated food packaging machinery.
Parking had been reserved for our group in front of the museum and we were received by Olivier and Susan Cerf who gave a brief introduction and history of the museum which was founded in 2005.
This museum’s unique international collection has a theme of innovation in automotive engineering. One of the key exhibits is the only working true replica of the World’s first self-propelled vehicle, the 1770 Le Fardier de Cugnot. This steam powered car designed and built in Paris, France. The collection contains 71 vehicles which have been restored to a very high working standard and a number have won awards at national events including Pebble Beach and Amelia Island.
We of course had to dine and following the museum tour we enjoyed lunch at the famous Quaker Steak and Lube restaurant in Clearwater.
I can definitely recommend a visit to this unique museum.

VFC Charity Golf Tournament
On 11/9/19 the first Golf Tournament sponsored by VFC was held at Plantation Golf & Country Club. The charity being supported was the Southeastern Guide Dogs. This non-profit organization provides trained guide dogs to those with vision loss and service dogs to veterans with PTSD. Seventy golfers braved a rainy beginning morning to start the tournament. There was a display of all seven generations of Corvettes. There was chance to win a new C8 Corvette at hole 3. All the golfer had to do was have a hole-in-one. Unfortunately no one was so lucky.
After golf was competed, lunch was served to golfers and volunteers. Prize announcements followed food as did a few words from an invited veteran. For a first time event, everything went smoothly and was very successful in raising funds for donation. Planning has already begun for next year's event.

After the Caravan
Upon leaving Bowling Green and the museum, a number of the VFC members went on an extended caravan. First there was a trip to the 'Tail of the Dragon', a road only 11 mile long that includes 318 turns. For years the 'Trail' has been a draw for motorcycle and sports cars alike. It is no surprise that club member (at least those driving) enjoyed the ride. The group then extended their cruise to other locations in the area, including Dollywood.

VFC Caravan Members at Bowling Green KY
VFC Caravan Members gathered at a local park for a group picture. A member had asked Eric Bushman from Scottsville, KY to take some professional pictures. He had taken some pictures of our cars during our caravan to the Corvette Museum. He took some group shots and individual ones. He put together a special composite of the pictures.

National Corvette Museum 25 Year Anniversary
The caravan pulled into Bowling Green to a sea of Corvettes. Corvettes from all over the country, and some from overseas, took part of the many activities at the museum. The grounds around the museum were filled with Corvettes. Shuttle buses went from the parking lot to the museum. The C8s were near a museum entrance where vette owners could get a close look at the new model. A nearby tent displayed the various C8 options such as colors, seats and other options. Inside the museum were displays of Corvette models through the years. The sink hole display and resurrected cars that fell into the hole were eye opening. Various talks and book signings were happening throughout the museum.
Jefferson Starship performed a free concert in the Amphitheater near the museum followed by fireworks. Touring lap sessions were available at the NCM three mile long track nearby. Each night the VFC group had a local restaurant reservation giving us time to share with club members our day's experiences.
Club members got together at a local park for special remembrance group picture. Saturday many VFC members departed Bowling Green to return to Venice or continue to other nearby locations such as a run through 'Tail of the Dragon'. Overall a very memorable time.

2019 National Corvette Caravan
Every 5 years there is an event at the National Corvette Museum to celebrate the museum opening. This year is the 25th Anniversary of the opening. Corvette Caravans from all over the United States (and the world) drive to the museum the week before Labor Day. About 20 VFC cars left Venice to join other vette owners in Daytona Beach. Another group of VFC cars left a day later go to the GA overnight stop.
At the Daytona International Speedway (DIS) we got our first glimpse of the track during a meet and greet with fellow members of the Florida Caravan. The next day was for tours of the track in open air trams followed by a visit to the DIS museum. That night was a dinner, again at the DIS, followed by a DJ and dancing.
The next morning, early at 7:30am, we staged for our parade lap of the track. We used both the banking and infield course. The Daytona police then stopped traffic (including the interstate 95) and escorted us out of Daytona to I95 on our way to GA for our overnight stay. The next day the caravan left Acworth, GA for Bowling Green and the Corvette Museum.

Corvettes & Coffee
On Saturday, July 20th six VFC couples took off from our regular Laurel Road starting point for Corvettes & Coffee at a home in Winter Haven, Fl. We hit the road at 8:00 AM and arrived at the home around 10:15 AM. As we pulled in the signs said to turn right and the driveway goes around the back of their home to a large parking lot in front of the homes garage and a huge workshop building. I would say that there were at a minimum 30 to 40 Corvettes there including ours. They saved some Donut’s for us, so we proceeded to eat & drink along with talking to other Corvette owners. We had a great time and found out that the home has a basement, what a rarity for Florida. We departed around 11:30 AM and stopped at Chili’s for lunch on the way home.

Fantasy of Flights
Thirteen Corvettes and one tin car left our staging area on Laurel Road at 9:15 on Saturday, July 13th. Our destination, Fantasy of Flight in Polk City. The 100 mile trip brought us to Fantasy of Flight as they opened at 11:00 AM. Our tour began at 11:30. A tour is only as good as the one giving it and ours was excellent! He started with the Wright Brothers and we moved though the early years of flight, World War I, the barnstormers and pylon racing days of the 30s and through the years of World War II. Each era had a plane or two to represent it and our guide had stories about the plane, those who built it and the pilots that flew it.
Our tour ended at 12:45, just in time for the 15 minute trip to Ford's Garage in Lakeland for lunch. They were ready for us with two long tables. In addition to their unique decor they're known for their half pound burgers and we were not disappointed. Those ordering other options from the menu were not disappointed either. Some returned the way we came while others chose a more scenic back roads route home.

Corvette’s @ The Pier
This 26th annual event hosted by The Suncoast Corvette Association was held on Saturday, May 25th at the North Straub Park in downtown St. Petersburg. The weather was warm, but not hot and we had plenty of shade. We had sixteen cars as part of our group, including a members nephew – who tells me he’s about to become new member. Of the sixteen participants, eight of us split ten awards. Congrats to those that won! Of course our club photographer was there and pictures of the winners will appear in the Gazette. The Tampa Bay Corvette Club won Club participation with nineteen cars – yep, three more than us. I’m told that at this show they tend to be our biggest competitor. Well, I wasn’t counting, but while they may have won the club participation award, but VFC members won more individual awards – way to go VFC. Next year, our goal is to have twenty-five cars in the show and go for the sweep – club participation and member awards. Thanks to all that showed up!

Brunch at Der Dutchman 5/17/19
Unfortunately our long anticipated tour of the PGT facility scheduled for May 17th was canceled. We decided to make good use of the day we had reserved for the tour and meet for brunch at the Der Dutchman Restaurant & Bakery in Sarasota.
Seventeen Corvettes and one '70 Chevelle carrying a total of thirty-three members met at our Laurel Road staging area at 8:45. We pulled out at 9:00 and headed North on I-75. The half hour trip was uneventful and surprisingly we didn't loose anyone on the way. The restaurant was ready with our seating and coffee. Whether the buffet was chosen or we ordered from the menu, food was excellent and plentiful!
After eating and conversation it was time to depart. The gift shop drew several of our members up the stairs as they attempted to leave. Others tried leaving through the bakery and were seen carrying bags of goodies as they exited.

Cruisin' Corvettes Car Show April 13, 2019
On Thursday, April 11th the two club cars left to attend the Cruising Corvettes of Tallahassee all Corvette. The show was held on Saturday, April 13th at the Dale Earnhardt Chevrolet Dealership. With a 9:00 AM departure, stopping for lunch at a Cracker-Barrel restaurant in Gainesville and arrived at our hotel around 3:30 PM. Dinner was at Wahoo’s seafood restaurant close by to our hotel.
The next day we went to the Tallahassee Automobile Museum. What a place it was!!!!! The man who created it is a Case Cutlery Dealer and we were told that the display of knives and pocket knives on display had over 10,000 pieces. Then there were model cars, motorcycles, golf clubs, dolls, outboard motors, boats, electronics and pedal cars before we even got to the automobiles. Many makes and models from Corvettes to Batmobiles and all others in between. Two floors of all of the above-mentioned items. After the museum we went to the Backwoods Crossing restaurant across the street for lunch. All fresh veggies from their own garden on site. Great place to go.
On Saturday morning we all had breakfast together and then headed for the show. After getting to our parking spot we unloaded our Corvettes and set about getting them ready for judging. The field of entries was not large with only 20 or so Corvettes. The judging started around 11:30 AM and awards were handed out at 2:30 PM. Club cars were awarded a first and second trophies.
Picnic & Member Meeting Maxine Barritt Park April 2, 2019
The weather reports threatened rain for the day. Instead we had a beautiful evening for our annual Farewell Snowbird Picnic. There were 202 VFC members signed up to attend. There were a few no-shows but we filled the picnic tables at the Maxine Barritt Pavilion, plus the tables under the four 10 X 10 canopies that were set up adjacent. Many hands went up when asked how many were snow birds. They are a big part of our club during these winter months. We're glad they decided to make VFC part of their annual visit to our area and look forward to their return next winter season. The membership meeting went quickly.
Then came dinner. The two servers kept the line moving, serving almost 200 of us with smiles on their faces. A big thank you to our members who stepped up to help with the set-up and clean-up. The location is a great place to hold the picnic. Afterword , members went down to the beach to watch the sunset.

Name That Tune
Thanks to everybody who attended Name That Tune last Saturday night, 3/2/19. We all had a very nice time, Pelican Pointe did a great job, and of course the music was wonderful. The prize monies were $10 each for the 1st place winner, $5 each for 2nd place, and $1 each for 3rd place.nDrum roll please...
The 1st place winners and recipients of the trophy were the High Octanes!
The second place winners were the sgantsum. (Yep that’s Mustangs spelled backwards, even though there were only 2 couples from the former Mustangs.
Third place went to our honored guests Peace River Corvettes.
We, as hosts, decided to stay in the competition this year, but had agreed to donate any winnings from our table, to the Salvation Army Food Bank. Much to my surprise, the first place team decided to do the same.
It always a fun evening whether you know the answers or not! Nancy & Barry love doing the event and we always enjoy having them!

Saturday morning, 2/23/19, dawned with foggy conditions for the caravans leaving from Laurel Road and Veterans Bivd for the Chapter #82 of the Disabled American Veterans Car Show in Punta Gorda. The caravans linked up at the south on ramp at Veterans Blvd for an uneventful ride to Muscle Car City. There was a total of 36 cars from the club that arrived that morning. Some members did not caravan, and were already parked by the time the caravan arrived around 8 am. Members of the club won 12 show favorite trophies. The weather was nice with comfortable temperatures and light winds. There was plenty of shade available to stay out of the sun and a good food vendor for food and drinks. The members had a good time looking at all the other cars and some paid to enter the museum to see the large collection of Corvettes and other cars. Our entry fees to this show go to support disabled Veterans in our communities with very little overhead. I would like to personally thank all of our members for supporting this worthy cause by showing our fantastic cars of all generations of Corvettes. The DAV chapter leadership was very impressed and appreciative that Venice Corvettes came to the show in such a large number! They said they hope to see us next year! This outing was successful due to the organizational skills of the event Captains.

VFC Meet & Greet
Pelican Preserve Open Car Show
Early Saturday morning, February 16th, there were about 17 VFC Corvettes behind the McDonald's on Laurel Road. Several members arrived early enough to have breakfast and coffee and everyone agreed it was a convenient place to meet. The approach to the interstate went well as did the approximate one hour trip to Pelican Preserve. Several more members joined our caravan as we passed the interstate on ramps.
More members were waiting our arrival for a total of 26 memberships represented. Corvettes on the Gulf reserved our usual parking space. The shade from the oaks was welcome, the falling oak leaves not so much. A big arts and crafts show shared the location and both inside and outside food and beverages were offered. When it came time to hand out the awards, our members brought home 16. Our 26 Corvettes were enough to win the Corvette Club Participation award, a trophy and $100. The $100 will be returned to the show's charity, Barbara's Friends Golisano Children's Hospital Cancer Fund. The Event Captain keeps the trophy! This a show our club has supported and enjoyed for many years. If you were unable to attend this year, give it a try in 2020.

Detail Clinic
On Saturday February 9th 15 club members with 14 Corvettes and one Harley showed up to caravan to Sage Auto Studio in Lakewood Ranch. The Detailing seminar was very informative. Sage covered cleaning our wheels, clay bar process, wet sanding, polishing and finally bringing a few junk yard car hood back to a fantastic shine with hands on instruction using the proper procedures. We started off with coffee and donuts and ended with pizza. We also had 3 raffle winners of widow protection. If anyone is interested in participating in this seminar, Sage is repeating another one on March 2nd in conjunction with another Corvette club. If interested call Alex @ (941) 780-2425 at Sage to reserve your spot.”
VFC Cruise to Polo Match 2/3/19
The cruise on February 3 was to enjoy a polo match with a box lunch for good measure. Unfortunately the playing field was too damp for the match to go on. The event became an impromptu meet and greet.
Lemon Bay High School Open Show 2/2/19
Weather forecasts through the week predicted a chance of showers on Saturday, February 2nd. We kept our fingers crossed for a sunny day. It worked and it was a beautiful day for the Lemon Bay High School Band Benefit Car and Truck Show.
Venice Florida Corvettes has always made supporting our local high schools a high priority, and this show was no exception. Twenty-seven Club Corvettes met for the caravan. It was only a three mile ride with one turn but interrupted by several traffic lights. We all made it, eventually, to join other members already parked and cleaning their Corvettes. In total, forty-two memberships were represented, bringing 43 Corvettes and two tin cars! That accounted for 40% of the 107 cars registered for the show.
As in 2018, a club member stepped up to organize the judging. Several VFC members volunteered to judge as well as a couple Harbor Corvettes members. All went as planned and trophies were awarded at 2:00, just as they were scheduled to be. Three members won awards for Best In Class. Two special awards were presented too. A member's car won Band Director's Choice for their 1999 C5 Coupe. The Principal's Choice was a C7 coupe member's car. Congratulations to the winners and thanks to all the VFC members who stepped up to support this show!

VFC Welcome Back Brunch
On Sunday, January 13th, 153 VFC Members gathered at the Boca Royale Golf and Country Club and enjoyed great company and a delicious Brunch. 19 Corvettes caravanned from Venice to Englewood. Our group continues to grow so we will have use of the large Dining Room again next year. It was great to see so many "yellow shirts" enjoying this time together!
Thanks to our volunteer Club photographer, for recording the event and taking pictures of members with their cars for inclusion on our Club's website.
Hope to see many Members at next year's Boca Brunch!

Bell Tower Open Car Show
On Saturday, January 5th eleven VFC member departed from our Laurel Rd Caravan starting place at 7:00 AM and headed south on I-75 for the 17th Annual Corvette & Open Car Show sponsored by Corvettes on The Gulf. Upon arrival in Ft. Myers everyone got busy cleaning & getting their Corvette ready for the judges. When it was time for the awards, we took our chairs and headed for the award area. We were surprised when they awarded VFC the club participation award Trophy and $100.00 dollars. Out of 13 Corvettes from our club 10 received a Trophy. We did quite well and I was pleasantly surprised with the amount of VFC members who attended this show.
San Pedro Church Open Car Show
Saturday December 8 the San Pedro Church held its quarterly car show fund raiser. There was a very large selection of great antique cars to see and a few Corvettes in attendance. Most other trophies went to the flashier cars and the real antiques. The very beautiful Black Rose Corvette owned by a Harbor Corvettes member won a large Trophy. A trophy was given to a post 2000 Corvette, a Ford, and a Chrysler, and those were all of the trophies given to non-antiques, non-flashy cars.
VFC Christmas Party
The VFC Christmas party at the Venice Yacht Club is always a popular event. This year on December 2 club members numbering 131 enjoyed the decorations, hors d'oeuvres, dinner, music and dancing.
Holiday Happening Car Show 12/2/18
Venice Christmas Parade
The 18th Annual Venice Holiday Parade took place on November 24th.The parade is one of the largest holiday parades in the state of Florida. There were over 100 different groups/organizations taking part. Once again, the VFC Corvettes shown brightly. We were extremely pleased, that this year we had our list of participants filled immediately. And, we had alternates waiting in line. Thank you to all who participated.
The threat of rain was looming, but after a few light sprinkles while gathering at our meeting place, the rain disappeared. We arrived at our staging area shortly before 5:00 PM and, immediately began putting the last minute touches on the cars.
After the long wait, we finally began moving into the parade line and proceeded down the parade route. In spite of the construction in progress in Venice, the crowds gathered for the parade were large and very enthusiastic. It is very satisfying to see all the smiles that brighten the faces of the viewers when we come passed. Young and old, are thrilled to see our corvettes coming down the route.
For the first time there was a car representing our sponsor Bill Buck Chevrolet, in the parade with us. It was exciting to see the great job our new participants did on their cars. After the parade, club members met at Norma Jean's restaurant for some food and libation.
To see additional pictures of the VFC Corvettes in the parade, check the Herald Photo Gallery on line. If you missed the parade, there is a video on Facebook that can be viewed.
The VFC corvettes show up about 55:06 minutes on the timeline.

Spanish Point
We were blessed with beautiful weather on Oct 30, 2018 as we set off from Lemon Bay Plaza in Englewood. About 18 cars joined our caravan and had a smooth 30 minute trip up to Osprey where we were joined by the remaining club members at Historic Spanish Point. In all 60 people had signed up for this event, and 54 attended. At the Gazebo, we had a short orientation talk about the burial ground nearby and then broke into 3 walking groups and 1 group riding a tram.
Our volunteer guides took each group in a different direction, and we were impressed by their breadth of knowledge, speaking ability, and crowd control. The four areas to be covered were plants, Palmer/preservation, prehistory and pioneers. Each group saw the middens which represent thousands of years of discards from the Native American civilizations that inhabited the area. The building showing the archeologic explorations of the layers was extremely interesting and included a short video.
Mary’s Chapel was another highlight, telling the story of a young woman who loved the area and died of consumption at an early age . Her family and friends honored her memory by building a chapel, which is now the site of many weddings and christenings .
There are also lovely sunken gardens with a pergola and the White Cottage Lawn where gala events, yoga retreats and weddings can be held.
Following our two hours at Spanish Point, we adjourned to Frankie’s Italian Restaurant just a couple miles away where a busy staff served us a variety of freshly prepared food including salad plates, burgers and fries, fish and chips, gyro and fries, eggplant parmesan sub, or pizza.
We headed back to our homes having enjoyed a lovely day with good friends, having learned more about the area we in which we live, topped off with a satisfying meal.

Vette Decoration Clinic
On Oct 19 Rich Gruenberg and Judy Umbreit hosted a Corvette decoration clinic in preparation for the upcoming Venice Christmas parade. The club has taken part in the parade for a number of years. Last year the club cars were awarded Brightest Holiday Lights. Six members attended and were able to view Rich and Judy’s car with some of its lights attached. Rich went over ways to attach the lights and how to power them. He was able to answer the questions of the first time decorators.
Corvettes at the Beach - Flagler County Corvette Club
October 7, 2018 was the Corvette car show at downtown Flagler Beach. There was a welcome party the day before the show. A number of club members ventured across the state for the show. Some good looking trophies were brought home to Venice.
Poker Run
The Poker Run is the Peace River Corvette Club major fund raiser. VFC was represented with 6 Corvettes.
It was my first poker run so didn't know what to expect. There were six stops where each player received a playing card in a sealed envelope. The first stop was the registration and starting point, the Olympia Restaurant in Port Charlotte. We were told there was plenty of time to travel the route and visit the stops so we did what any member of VFC would do, we ate breakfast before heading out.
The stops were 10 to 30 miles apart and as far south as North Ft. Myers. We tried to travel as a club and took turns taking the lead. The directions were sketchy at times and maybe made sense to those familiar to the areas, but thanks to cell phone GPS we were able to find the next stops. They were varied and several by themselves would make a great social event destination for our club. Included were a bamboo farm with pottery, a classic car restoration garage with an adjacent automobilia museum/shop, a Harley Davidson dealership that was hosting a Breast Cancer Awareness event, a wildlife sanctuary providing homes for lions, tigers, bears etc. and stop #6 at Beef O'Brady's in Punta Gorda.
By the time we arrived at stop #6 it was was time to eat again. The Peace River Corvette Club had arranged for a private room where all the events usually associated with a car show were offered. In addition to checking our poker hands (we didn't win), door prizes were given out (everyone got one) 50/50 tickets were sold and there was a basket raffle as well as a silent auction. VFC brought home 3 of the baskets as well as a good selection of the auction items.
It was a long day, but a lot of fun. We'll do it again next year and suggest you consider it. What other event gives you the opportunity to visit several very interesting places that you probably didn't know existed and have the chance to eat twice!

VFC - 2018 Road Trip Report
We are all safely back home! Our planned trip out west of 5,200 miles developed into a very exciting tour of 6,000+ miles. This was completed by five couples from our club without any mechanical issues or even flat tires in 25 days on the road.

Goldtones @ Olde World Restaurant
On September 22, 2018 28 members went to Olde World not to enjoy a welcome back brunch (as in past years) but to enjoy dinner and entertainment by the group Goldtones. The food was good, service to match and the music entertaining. The dance floor was soon filled with many yellow shirts.
Pioneer Days Englewood
Pioneer Days on Sept 3, 2018 has been an event with Venice Florida Corvettes attendance for many years. There is a all Corvette Show and a parade.
Corvettes at the Pier
Saturday, August 25 2018 the Suncoast Corvette Association finally had their 25th aniversary Corvette show originally scheduled for May 26th. In spite of the hot August temperatures 12 Venice Florida Corvettes caravanned from Laurel Road to Bayshore Drive in St. Petersburg where we met 1 other member. The trip was good and uneventful till we got off the highway and took an unexpected tour before finding the park. We were parked in our club's reserved area cars emptied, chairs set up, and cleaning began. Everyone did an outstanding cleaning job and the results at the end of the day were 8 members brought home a plaque or a trophy for a job well done. Congratulations to the following VFC winners: John Gammel – C4, Don & Tammy Gursky C5 late,Suncoast Corvette Association did a great job and even with the long delay due to bad weather in May, it was a good show. They had a large number of vendors, a live band, as well as the basket raffle, and 50/50 drawing. This 25th anniversary show helped to support Boley Center of St. Petersburg.
We enjoyed a fun day with our fellow members and thanks to the shade of the trees and a nice breeze coming on shore it was tolerable for late August.

Corvettes & Coffee
On Saturday, August 18th five club members left from our regular Laurel Road starting point for Corvettes & Coffee around 7:30 AM. We took the scenic route to the home of Robin & Peggy Lewellen’s home in Winter Haven, FL.
The 2 hour drive up was perfect until we made a right turn onto Thompson Nursery Rd only to find that it was closed for construction repairs. One of the locals told us to continue straight from where we were and take the first right. I took the first right and ended up in a trailer court. Needless to say we finally found our way.
When we pulled, in the signs said parking to our right. and The drive way goes around the back of their home and to a larger parking area. We parked and the owners greeted us. We had coffee and donuts and proceeded to meet other Corvette owners. This was a great time and hope to return to the next one.
We stopped at a Chili’s for lunch and then headed home in plenty of time for Lickity Split Ice-cream Caravan later that day.

Cruise-In with Candy Girl
Candy Girl is a DJ at WSRZ who hosts a car show related spot each Saturday. She has supported the VFC for many years, seldom missing our show in Venice. She was again hosting a cruise-in at Bill Buck Chevrolet (a club sponsor) on 8/10/18. The weather was warm but fun was had by all.
Meet and Greet at Howards
August 4, 2018 once again found the club getting together just for fun at Howards Restaurant in Englewood. Photos of club members and cars were taken for the web site.
Rev's Institute/Museum
On Friday, July 20, 2018, 43 club members with 21 Corvettes and one tin car visited Revs Institute in Naples, Florida to tour their facility. Revs is one of the best car museums in the country
Our group was broken into smaller groups led by individual tour guides. The facility holds many one of a kind cars and had a special Zora Duntov exhibit containing one of the original Grand Sports and the 1957 concept racer that he designed. The 1957 Corvette SS is on loan from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum.
Our guides were very knowledgeable and there were many special cars including one from the 1800s and a 1912 electric powered car that just entered the museum.
The tour lasted approximately two hours and we received a lot of history and detailed information about the historical significance of each car. Many of the cars individually represented a change to the how cars are built today from the overhead cam engines, radial tires, aluminum wheels, to the designs of the bodies of the cars themselves. Racing had a big influence on how these changes were made. Many of these cars are not just static displays but take part in vintage racing throughout the country.
After we visited the museum, we drove a short distance and had a great comfort food lunch at Mel’s diner in Naples. After lunch we all split up and went our separate ways. Overall, it was a great day with great cars and great friends

Candy Girl from WSRZ 107.9 and Bill Buck Chevrolet hosted a party celebrating 17 years on the radio on 6/22/18. The Cruise-In was for all cars not just the Venice Florida Corvettes. We were treated to food, drink and fun.
Corvettes & Coffee
The Island Walk community once again hosted Corvettes and Coffee on 6/16/18. Coffee and donuts were served at the community center and at noon lunch was served. This was followed by games, prizes and raffles.

Military Museum Cruise
On Tuesday, June 12, Connie Poynter and Mary Chadsey were the co-captains for a visit to the Military Heritage Museum and lunch at the Captain's Table in Fisherman Village, Punta Gorda. There were 36 VFC members in attendance. The museum represents all units of the U.S. Armed Forces and all U.S. Wars. It will be moving shortly to its own building across the street from Fisherman Village. The group was honored with a short presentation about the history and future direction of the museum. Our members were very generous with their donations to support the museum. Lunch was at the Captain's Table on the second floor with stunning views overlooking the marina and Charlotte Harbor. The day was full of museum viewing, lunch and shopping in the many stores in Fisherman Village. Fun was had by all.
Myrtle Beach
Myrtle Beach Corvette Club presented their 23rd annual Corvette Show on Saturday, June 2nd. This was held at Broadway at the Beach in Myrtle Beach and was attended by three VFC members. Out of almost 300 Corvettes, our club took home two third place trophies.
Two members drove straight through but we took a leisurely two day journey to the lovely beaches of South Carolina. The Landmark Motel came through with a washing station and covered parking for all of our babies. Friday evening was the Welcome Party with a nice dinner, many raffle baskets and entertainment for dancing into the evening. As we entered the ballroom, waters and iced tea were already poured and in the center of each table were two tall glass containers full of a brownish liquid. My first mistake was telling everyone it was tea for our refills! The wait staff had to explain to many guests that I was wrong, it was colored water for decoration not for drinking! I can’t be right all of the time!
A beautiful day for the car show with plenty of shopping possibilities, restaurants and maybe an adult beverage or two. A fun day full of great cars and super people. 27 clubs were represented from all over the US. Farthest away was one from Ohio but we were right up there with miles traveled. Lots of trophies, door prizes and great conversation rounded out our day. Think about this one for next year!

On May 19, 2018 Howards Restaurant was the meeting place for the for the club to get together for lunch. The event had a dual purpose because the club photographer was there taking pictures of members and their car. The pictures are displayed on the club website. With the size of the club, it's a great way to put a name, face and Corvette together.
VFC Meet & Greet
Ponce Inlet Corvette Show
May 13, 2018 was the Corvette show at Ponce Inlet on the east coast. When we got there it looked like rain and it did on three different occasions. A lot of my time covering and cleaning and re-cleaning the car. The park was filled with Vettes , they really pack them in at the inlet. Checking out the other cars and answering questions gobbled up a lot of time and then they started the presentation. C1 through C7 trophies were presented, and as you would expect newer meant more, in terms of volume per class. I was surprised at how many C2's were represented and now a days they all look good. I was pleasantly surprised at how "old blue" did, I'm sure driving so far and being in the Venice Corvette Club played into it. The night before was the "Welcome party" and it was on the beach. The weather was great and the hospitality exceptional. Overall it was a good car show, they judged like our club and I liked that. The ride to get there was a bit much in a C2 but it gave me a chance to visit one of my old GM buddies who lives close by.
Cadillac Sal
On March 31, 2018 the club cruised northward to visit maybe the ultimate Cadillac supporter, Cadillac Sal. We were warmly greeted as we entered Sal's man cave. The first room was filled with pictures, car models and other Cadillac items. The pictures showed that Sal with several well-known racecar drivers and with other car enthusiast including Jay Leno. Jay visited Sal when was in town and invited Sal to visit his garage.
From the first room we continued other rooms. There were more Cadillac models, memorabilia. One room was filled with Cadillac manuals, sale brochures and promotion items. There was even a room dedicated to his favorite sports team the “NY Yankee”.
The grand finale was entering Sal's town of Cadillac's in front of various storefronts. There was a fire station for the Ghost Busters Spook-mobile (a replica not the movie original). The movie original was the “Driving Miss Daisy” black Cadillac. Other Cadillac's filled the town, these were cars he had or wanted in his youth. During the entire tour, Sal told us about his cars and the many people he had met attending various car events. Sal's main room Cadillac town is maintained by him and the cars are driven routinely. All 19 club members went away impressed and those that had to cancel the visit truly missed a great event. No one could have been more hospitable and gracious as a host. We finished the event with lunch at Gecko's joined by Sal.

Corvettes on the Circle
St. Armands is a unique location for a car show. The cars are in the circle grass area surrounded by restaurants and wonderful shopping. May 5, 2018 was a great day for a car show, the weather cooperated from the time the caravan left till the conclusion of the show. We departed the Laurel location at 7:15 and arrived just before 8:00 AM, the caravan included twenty-one corvettes and we were all able to arrive at the same time. Unfortunately, as is the case at St Armand's Circle parking can be a little scattered, however we were clustered in several small to medium groups and were only a short distance from one another. We missed the award for club participation by two cars (we had three no shows). We did however take 5 trophies home with us and they were as follows:
C-5 3rd place
C- 7 3rd place
C- 3 2nd place
C- 2 1st Place
C- 1 1st place
We had great weather all the way until the ride home, i think many if not all of us ran into rain. on the way home!

On Saturday April 21st 8 Corvette’s left Venice at 9:45 am for Ft. Pierce. It was a leisurely drive over on RT 72 the then to RT 70 to the city of Ft. Pierce. We arrived around 1:00 PM and checked into our hotel the Hutchinson Island Plaza Hotel & Suites. After check-in lunch was at The Edge Bar & Grill. The tables were on the sand and looked out to an inlet to the Atlantic Ocean.
Dinner was at the Manatee Island Grill. Another great meal was enjoyed along with and good conversation.
The next morning brought some rain and cloudy skies. At the show location the rain was pouring down until about 10 am. Judging started just as we got the Corvettes dried. It was very windy but the once the sun came out it was nice.
Two club members won awards for the top 30 Corvettes.
In spite of the rain, all had fun!

Lipizzaner Stallion Show
The Lipizzaner stallions are associated with the Spanish Riding School of Vienna, Austria, where they demonstrate the movements of classical dressage which includes stylized jumps and other movements. During the end of World War II, the horses were saved from possible destruction by the advancing Russians by General George Patton.
We don't have to go to Vienna to see some of the horse. They are much closer in Myakka City at the Herrmann Ranch. There on March 15, 1983 we saw a demonstration of the training routines of these amazing horses. The ranch is operated by a third generation descendant of Colonel Herrmann Sr. who brought Lipizzaners to America in 1963. The show was interesting and at the end it was time to go to a local restaurant for lunch.
